"Frequently Asked Questions a/k/a Stuff I wanna know!

This is my first web site. How do I get started?

Getting started on your first web site is a lot easier than you think. With me at your side we can make this "task" into a fun adventure! I guide you through the entire process. Please note, that at this time I do not offer hosting; however, I have a list of hosting companies that won't steer you wrong.

How long before my web site is up and running?

Ah, yes. This is a popular question. And the answer is, it all depends on you! Let me clarify. Web site's need lot's of content, i.e. photographs and text to make them work properly. Without these key elements, getting a web site up and running may take longer than expected. However, if you do not have images or text for your web site, I am more than happy to help you get royalty free stock photos and write some text. I work at your pace. If you want this done quickly, not a problem. Want to take your time too, not a problem. I am here for you.

I already have a web site, domain name and hosting, but, I am dissatisfied with my current web site. Can you help me?

Of course! If you want to revamp your current site, no problem! Or if you want to update your current web site and make it more "fresh", I can do that too! *Best practice in web design states that content should be updated at least once a month to keep content fresh!*

How will I know if I will like my web site before it actually goes live?

Good question, easy answer. I do all design on my web server. So, for example you will have your own personal link, www.karenplacek.com/yournamehere.html. You can view your own personal link 24/7. Often times I work late nights and make changes frequently; however, whenever an update is made final, I email you to notify you. Communication is a key element in the design of your web site. No web sites GO LIVE until I have your final approval.

"I already have a design concept laid out, can you do that?"

I can! And will! All I need is a copy of what you have in mind and let's get started!

How does your web design process work?

I start the web design process by either meeting with you in person or scheduling a meeting over the phone. It is not necessary to meet with me, but nice to meet new people. During our initial meeting I will need what you expect. For example, how many tabs for the navigation, i.e., "home", "about","contact me", etc. Five tabs are included in my initial fee. Do you want "Flash" content? Flash content does cost extra. However, keep in mind that Flash is quickly becoming outdated and is not visible in all web devices, i.e., Apple products. I use jQuery for all of my projects. Do you have pictures? Or will I need to provide them? Will I be assisting you in writing your text? REMEMBER, I am here for all that you need! Any questions that you might have! After our meeting I will contact you with a proposal. If you accept the proposal agreement, you will be sent a contract. When the contract is signed and the initial start up fee is paid, the designing will begin! Here's where the fun starts!

If you do not have a design concept in mind already, I will provide you with three different mock-ups. These are to give you ideas about what you web site can look like and the idea's that I have in my head from meeting/talking with you. Your web site needs to reflect who you are and this is where my idea's for your web site come from.

Many revisions will be made during this mock-up phase. No worries! That is what this phase is for. Once we have settled on a concept idea, I begin to put the web site together, "fake" live. This is where you will be able to see your link, but not actually live for all to see, just yet. Once I have your final approval on the design, photos, text, and once final payment is made, we go LIVE!

Once final payment is received and we are live, you will receive a disc of all of your files for you to keep in a safe place or for future reference.

*Please note that part of your contract is six months of maintenance*

Cross Browser Testing, what is it?

Ah yes! Cross Browser Testing! This is a MUST for ANY web designer! It is important that your website render in all different browsers. I will test your website for compatability at a 1024 x 768 resolution and in the following browsers:
• Internet Explorer, lovingly referred to as "IE", 7, 8, 9 and 10
• Firefox
• Google Chrome
• Opera
I use only the most recent browsers to cross-test, except for Internet Explorer.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me! I am here for you!!
